In cooperation with the Engineers Without Borders - Karlsruhe Institute of Technology e.V. (EWB) the drinking water supply system in the village Brabal should be renewed and improved. In addition, the construction of a waste disposal system is planned. Both projects can be adapted in other villages after successful completion.

Information on these projects can be found at:

In many of the mountain villages there is no running water. There is a lack of baths and possibilities for washing oneself in the villages that do not lie directly on the known trekking routes. Very often it is the women whom one can see washing themselves in the streams or water places. Within the scope of a village development project, a shower hut with a solar facility has been built for all the residents in the Langtang region in the village of Brabal at an altitude of 2,280 m. The building plot was made available by a family, free of charge. The construction of additional shower huts in other villages is planned for the future.

Rubbish is carelessly dropped on the floor or thrown away. Nobody has any consciousness for keeping the environment clean. As a further village development project we would like to start building a small waste incineration plant. For this purpose, dustbins are to be introduced everywhere, as a first step. In addition to this, a person is to be chosen from the village community, who is responsible for regularly emptying them and then burning the waste.

Aim of project

Drinking water supply:
The project intended to ensure a reliable supply with sufficient drinking water. Therefore it is planned to build a bulb fitting, a water pipe from the source to the village, multiple spare tanks, water taps and a water filter.

The villagers will be included in the implementation work (pipe laying, installations, etc.). The aim is further to increase the awareness for environmental protection and sustainability through knowledge sharing and exchanges. After completion of the project the inhabitants should be able to maintain the drinking water system independently. The necessary costs shall be covered by the payment of an annual water fee in the amount of NPR 1000 (about EUR 10) per household.

Garbage disposal:

With this project first of all we like to raise awareness in the various types of household waste (residual waste, bio-waste, garden waste, etc.), waste separation, the avoidance of waste as well as the possible disposal (composting, landfill, recycling, incineration, plastic press, feeding to animals).

In addition, the villagers are supported in construction of a wood composter for organic waste. If possible, plastic should be recycled. Therefore it should be pressed in the village and delivered to Kathmandu to a local recycling center. It is also planned to build a small waste incineration oven for the residual waste. The inhabitants should actively participate in the construction and implementation work. After completion of the project the operation and maintenance of the incineration oven and the plastic press should be carried out independently by a responsible person. This person should also collect the waste from the villagers. In order to make this work more attractive, it is planned that the person in charge gets a small monthly salary. This monthly salary should be financed by the inhabitants who pay a yearly or monthly waste fee.

The two projects contribute to improve the health and quality of life, too.

Project activities

Prior to the decision on the implementation of the project, four EWB students visited the village Brabal in October 2015. They inspected the existing water supply system, the amount of waste and the different waste types.

In November 2015 EWB decided to realize the two projects in close cooperation with Sunaulo Sansar. After that the development of concepts for the water pipe and the waste disposal started by different project groups.

In January 2016 Sunaulo Sansar visited the students in Karlsruhe. Open questions were clarified and further information exchanged.

Drinking water supply:

The first construction phase with installation of the water pipe system and collection of water samples for the filter design is planned for April and May 2016.

A second phase with the establishment of the filter system and additional water tabs is planned for September and October 2016.

Garbage disposal:

During the first phase of construction in April and May 2016, further information about garbage disposal  are collected. It is important to find out whether the inhabitants of the village accept the planned concept or not. In addition, a first compost can be built.

In October 2016, the completion of the project with the construction of other composts, the incineration oven and the plastic press is planned.

Expectations/ Sustainability

Drinking water supply:
The inhabitants of the village should help for the construction and get trained  in dealing with the water supply system. Thus a proper maintenance and functional capability of the system is guaranteed. Also the water fee helps to ensure that the inhabitants maintain the system.

Garbage disposal:

The inhabitants of the village should get trained to waste generation, waste prevention and waste disposal as well as in the use of composting, of waste incinerator oven and of plastic press. Cooperation with schools should raise awareness of environmental protection and of the above mentioned issues. Also the waste fee helps to ensure that the inhabitants of the village maintain the oven and the plastic press.

Time frame

Project starts: November 2015

Project ends: beginning 2017
